Agree this would make sense, do they use HTML, native etc

We'll probably need some input from a native speaker of a language with umlauts etc as to the correct phrasing etc

I am one of those native speaker. :)

You do not need the input from me/us. Those information needs to be based on how the translation is implemented. If the parsing of the files is based on UTF-8 then it makes more sense to write the UTF-8 characters directly etc.

When I make some updates to the translations, how is the new file saved? Is it saved in latin or utf8?

The encoding is UTF-8, though we do have partial support for using any encoding and specifying that in the file itself. I agree we should document this.
