Summary0000539: new structure in the menu
DescriptionIn my opinion it is very irritating when you have sit > control panel > users and under sit > users some user functionality. It would be better if those two menus are merged together.

Furthermore I would rename "control panel" to "configuration" and put it into the main menu.

Thanks for the feature request.

I share your frustration with the Control Panel menu, it has grown to the point where it is now a bit harder to use than we would like. I agree we should try and group everything under 'configuration' but I'm not convinced about putting it on the main menu, it's not something you need to access all the time.

The
SIT! -> Users
  and the
SiT! -> Control Panel -> Users

menus are actually quite different. The first contains items relating to other users and is accessibly by all users, the second is for configuring users and is accessible only by administrators (or those with the right permissions).

For me there are two reasons why I think it is better to have it in the main menu:

a) Those sub-sub-menus do not work well with all browsers. e.g. I have often the problem when I move with the mouse from the sub-menu to the sub-sub-menu then everything closes. (I guess this is because I move somehow over another menu entry.) If we have only the main menu and sub-menus then it is easier as well to see what is where.

b) If everything only an administrator can do is located within one main menu then it is easier for you to program the admin rights. You can or can not display the Control Panel menu entry in the main menu.

Btw. I have another name you could take instead of "Control Panel": Administration.
(Just as an idea. But I think it is clear to everyone that only administrator can go to the Administration menu.)

Thanks for your response.

a) yep I agree with that, the sub-sub menus are a real pain aren't they, not quite sure why they're so easy to close when you don't want them to, but yeah it happens.

b) For usability I'd rather not have things that appear or disappear depending on a users permissions, thats why we usually grey things out instead, this tells you that it is there but you don't have access. If it wasn't there at all you might not even know it exists.

Our permissions are (can be) more complex than admin access vs. user access but I see your point. I'll give it some thought.

'Administration' is a good suggestion, I fear however that it would still be confusing to some. Maybe 'Settings' would work?

I'm going to makr this request as "won't fix" and close it, because we're not likely to move the control panel out onto the main menu.

Thanks for your feedback though, it's useful to hear, and I'll bear the difficulties you have with the menu in mind when we come to do work with that in future.
