Summary0000916: remote management section
DescriptionWe have 90% clients, that we can support remotely. And almost all of them have RDP server. Some have RAdmin. Some clients have more than one rdp server (on different ports).
It would be good idea to make remote connection section in site options.
It should be possible to add several connections with next data: 1) ip adress 2) tcp port 3) user name 4) password (it must be hidden) 5) connection type (rdp, radmin, etc.)
I dont know yet what about radmin, but rdp connection file - its simple text. And you can make a link that will open connection from browser by one click.
And it will be good to add this link to incident table

You can already do this with 'Inventory' (See [^]) does this not do quite what you need?

i talked about link to connect to clients external ip adress from sit. and placing it in incident table and incident view.

Oh you mean to actually initiate a connection?

How would that work exactly? Can you post an example of what a link looks like?

i'm not a programmer....
it looks for me as a link on .rdp file (its remote desktop connection file), that sit generates, using ip, login, passowrd. you can create .rdp file in windows and open in notepad and you'll see. unix also have rdp clients.
do yuo anderstand me?

I see what you mean now. I don't think thats a standard thing it's just something that window does. You could attach the .rtdp file to an incident?

I must admit I wasn't familiar with them until you mentioned them but as you say the format does look fairly simple. (See below) I guess a plugin could be written to generate an RDP file from an inventory item, but it would not be possible for SiT to store the password in this file. I've done some research and it seems although it is possible to work with the encrypted passwords in .rdp files it is only possible on windows by using some microsoft DLL's, this is something we cannot do. [^]

Also, I don't know of any equivalent for other methods of remote access, SSH/VPN etc.

sample .rdp file:

screen mode id:i:1
session bpp:i:32
disable wallpaper:i:1
disable full window drag:i:1
allow desktop composition:i:0
allow font smoothing:i:0
disable menu anims:i:1
disable themes:i:0
disable cursor setting:i:0
full address:s:
autoreconnection enabled:i:1
authentication level:i:0
prompt for credentials:i:0
negotiate security layer:i:1

we have 90% clients, that we can support remotely via rdp. and we use rdp very often.
May be we are not alone... Feature to connect to clients via rdp directly from sit will save our time.
So may be there is no need to choose connection type and make this feature only for rdp. And i think i was wrong about to store connection password.
There should be section "RDP" with fields: 1) ip adress:tcp port 2) username\domain

we need to use 1) and 2) in theese strings to generate .rdp file:
full address:s:[ip adress:tcp port]

and there must be an option in config page about command line where user print command to open this generated .rdp file (for windows users it will be "mstsc.ex [.rdp file]").

I think I mentioned something about this somewhere..
My suggestion to this was that you can upload the pre made RDP file,
then you'll have the option of Save or Open, and you just choose Open in this case. With the default file association for RDP files to be opened with mstsc.exe you should be able to connect easily.

Giving the option of having a config connection file rather than the site generates a file is that you are not locked to what SiT can handle, but are more free to use your own tools, like VNC, SSH, all the different VPN clients etc.

ahh.. found my post in the forum here : [^]

Not sure when I'll get chance to work on this, but we seem to have found a good way to proceed now. Thanks Tomse/Sancho

Sorry there hasn't been an update on this for a long time, but I plan to take a look at it before 4.0 is released. If you'd like to add more notes to this Issue to explain more and discuss your requirements, that would be helpful.

I don know what about others, but we use remote support fo our customers very often. So if client make a call to us and we want to connect to it's desctop, we should firstly connect to client's server and from that server we connect to clients desctop.
So we need this feature to connect to client's server.
So remote connection section should be on site_edit.php page. May be it should be after Active checkbox and before Notes.
There are should be next fields in this section:
1) Ip adress (1 row text)
2) ISP details (text field of 3 rows)
3) remote connection link (like you can see on this page: [^] - connect to client1)
to make this link admin (engineer) shold just upload stroybalt.rdp file and give a name to this link (for example "terminal server".
also it will be good to choose icon for connection (separate icons for rdp, radmin, vnc, etc).
and there should be possibility to add several links - as many as you need.

As i said in previous post, remote connection section should be on site_edit.php page, but not in inventory.

Remote connection settings don't make sense on the site record to me. What if a site has more than one remote connection? This is precisely what inventory is useful for.

for example one client have 2 servers. to access to second server you should connect to first.
also this client have only one external ip to connect to.
so the site can have only one connection via rdp (or ssh, or vnc).
i think that there should be ability to add connections on site's page.
also link to connections should be displayed everywhere when we see this client.
for example, if this is rdp connection, see attach
sancho78rus (reporter)
2010-03-21 20:02

and if site have also ssh connection - there should be ssh icon next to rdp.

It will helps engineers to quickly connect to client directly from incident.

Your idea of an icon on the incident details page could be done via a plugin. So could the ability to add things from the sites page. I still think this is best done as inventory though, these connections are inventory items, they're not part of the site details.
sancho78rus (reporter)
2010-03-21 21:34

so is there plugin_do to realise this icon?
also there should be plugin_do in site's details page.
i'm i right?

I think there is, but if there isn't is very easy to add one.

Changing this into attachments we don't limit SiT to what it can produce, and we don't need to constantly fix a new feature when MS decides to make a change in the RDP.
